THRIFTING

Thrifted Looks: Lederhose

I’m a firm believer that fashion is what you make it. I mean after all I live in New York City….where individuality is flaunted and encouraged. So I couldn’t wait to “flex my creativity” and rock these light blue shorts I found on my last trip to the Housing Works BUY THE BAG Sale.  They’re called Lederhose (the suspenders kinda gave them away….ok, call me “Gretel”) and they are leather shorts steeped in the German tradition.

I paid about .89 cents for the shorts, and thought they’d be perfectly complimented by my navy velvet J. Crew blazer that I recently had tailored, and I’m always looking for an excuse to wear. Add a white tee from Target, navy tights, some sparkly pumps….and this monochromatic look is complete.  Durable. Versatile. Fun. For jewelry I could have easily gone with white gold, but opted to deviate from the cooler palette and added a touch of chic with a simple coin pendent and necklace and a yellow gold bracelet watch.

I mean…who says you have to wear things in the traditional sense? It’s all about thinking outside the box and making something your own. Tell me…what do you have in your closet that you could give your own spin?

OUTFITS

5 Must-Haves to Rev Up Your Winter Wardrobe

Yes, black is often a go-to color we all gravitate towards in winter, but the change in seasons doesn’t necessarily have to mean the death of how you express your personality….here are 5 Must Haves to Rev Up Your Winter Wardrobe that will help take it from drab….to fab!

You all know how much I am loving faux fur these days….and I have been stalking the web in search of one particular oh-so-chic Michael Kors Long Faux Fur Coyote Vest .  No luck thus far, but I still think there are some great ones out there to turn up the heat on your winter pieces. Throw it on over a chunky sweater, belt them around the waist….faux fur vests can be taken from day to night in a snap.

Cable knit, printed, whatever your poison….pick one…tights just makes facing Jack Frost in shorts and skirts a little more bearable.  So maximize your wearing potential! These peacock feather accented tights are fun and have lots of colors you can pair them with…blue, the red, the orange….the possibilities just got endless.

Now there are tons of cute booties out there, but something I always look for when picking ones that I can wear all day all over the city is:
1) if it’s real leather (not leatherette, polyurethane, or manmade materials)?
2) is the heel a decent height that I won’t be scrambling for my flats in an hour?
3) is it a neutral color that can be mixed and matched with lots of outfits (brown or black)?
4) is it a material and construction that can withstand the elements (so a suede peeptoe might not be a good idea)?

Bundling up is a must when the temp starts shimmying down, but why not add a punch of color to the mix? Gloves are a necessity, and these long gloves add a touch of sophistication AND they also bridge the space on your wrists that normally gets neglected with shorter gloves.  Warmth and functionality together in one…I love it!

Add a chunky circle scarf to this stand out coat and poof…..instant winter glam.  Coats just don’t have to be basic black. Layer up and grab some boots and you are all set to face the elements.
These 5 Must-Haves are undeniably a way to help you stretch your creativity.  Sure Winter is a little darker and cold, but you can still have just as much fun with your wardrobe experimenting with color and playing dress up.  I’ve spotted some colorful and stand out items that I’m sure you will love and will make you look forward to stepping out.
