Need a Free Pair of Shoes?
….of course you do! Who doesn’t?! New York is hard on a pair of shoes…and I’ve taken advantage of this very service a couple of times myself…..can you say “Clearance Section at D-S-W?”
Now before you get all excited, I must tell you that it is a service strictly for paid up entertainment union members (ie AFTRA, SAG, AEA, etc) and it has a couple restrictions, but overall….free can be a good thing any day.
So, here’s the story….back in 1945, a guy named Conrad Cantzen (God rest his soul) left his estate to the Actor’s Fund with one condition…that it be used strictly to ensure actors had new shoes so they did not appear “down at the heels” while hitting the pavement and auditioning. Conrad felt that a great pair of shoes were the first step (no pun intended 🙂 in making a good first impression on casting directors.
It’s because of his thoughtfulness that his Memorial Fund will reimburse you up to $40 on any one pair of shoes in a 12 month period, granted the shoes cost no more than $100 before tax.
So….if your current shoes can’t withstand one more trip to the shoe shop, feel free to splurge….you’ll be glad you did.
